First 100 Victoria Centre flats have better windows thanks to council works

The first 100 council flats above Nottingham’s Victoria Shopping Centre have had their windows refurbished in a project that will see windows improved in all of the flats by next year.

The flats, which are home to almost 500 residents, were completed in 1972 and remain the tallest building in Nottingham to this day. They are leased to the council in an agreement that will expire in the 2060s.

The window refurbishment project, which began in December last year, is forecast to  save over 850 metric tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions (the equivalent of taking almost 200 cars off the road). The refurbished windows will also enhance the building's thermal efficiency with the aim of reducing energy bills for residents.

Works to each flat will take a day on average, to minimise disruption for everyone who lives in the flats. Feedback from residents to date includes: “The site team is very good, and the fitters are great!”, “It’s a first-class job, they were very efficient and left a tidy finish”, and. “Well done job, first class service.”

The works are being carried out by infrastructure, construction and property services contractors United Living. Rob Moore, United Living’s Regional Director, says, “We’re delighted to be working with Nottingham City Council and the residents of the Victoria Centre as part of these important improvement works. The progress to date and feedback received, along with the long-term carbon benefits, makes this a significant, sustainable project for the partnership.”

Cllr Jay Hayes, Nottingham City Council’s Executive Member for Housing, said, “I’m delighted that the works are going well and that we’ve hit this important milestone in good time

”We put tenants at the heart of everything we do, so it’s great to hear such positive reports back from residents about the works and the people we have delivering them.”
